Things to know

Playa del Carmen has everything you could possibly need on a vacation. There are lots and lots of stores. There are laundromats, hardware stores, hair salons, grocery stores, tattoo parlors, health stores, gyms, Tae Kwon Do studios, etc. etc.

You can buy snorkel equipment, bathing suits, sandals, American cigarettes, booze, diapers, you name it, they've got it.

There are two bus stations. The one located on 5th is primarily for buses running up and down 307 from Cancun to Chetumal (View Map). The other bus station in Playa del Carmen is located at Avenida 20 and Calle 12 (View Map).

Local Climate

The climate in Playa del Carmen is very much like that of Cancun: Hot and humid, but the humidity is not as drenching as it can be in some other places in Mexico. July through Novemer is hurricane season in this part of the world - and the weather becomes more changeable and less predictable during these months. The rainy season is May through October. November through February is the high season on the Riviera Maya, and the weather remains quite hot during these times, which attracts many "snow birds" from northern USA and Canada and Western Europe for winter warmth and sunshine. The average annual temperature ranges from 25°C to 30°C.

Economy

The main economic activity here is timber as the region is rich in tropical woods from which mahogany, cedar and chicozapote - the chicle tree - are obtained. Also important is fishing for lobster, huachinango (red snapper) and pargo, among other species. To a lesser extent, agriculture - fundamentally maize - and cattle raising contribute to the local economy. Tourism has also become increasingly important to the region's finances in recent years.
